Why do people start smoking?
From the introduction post on the series of SMOKING , I asked for your opinions on why people smoke . I’m still expecting your answers. Not to delay much i have put up a little post below.
Smoking has become the way of life in some parts of the world even though its a silent killer. Sometimes i do ask myself the question ,WHY DO PEOPLE SMOKE ?.
If you ask some people that smoke they will look for one and a million reasons for this habit even though it doesn’t sound right. I did a little research on this and i realized that 90% of people start smoking as teenagers. Also the kind of friends they move with is another huge factor that leads to smoking –peer pressure. Also those who grew up with people who do this are 85% likely to smoke from teen.
Also the number of movies with tobacco-related scenes are on the increase daily. Young people who see smoking activities in movies tend to start smoking. The internet is another huge factor as youths are exposed to a large unregulated source of entertainment. TV ads for smoking have been banned for many years, but films that show tobacco brands are much more likely to include smoking scenes as part of their TV trailers. This seems to undercut the intent of the TV ad ban.
Most people start smoking when they are in their teens and are addicted by the time they reach adulthood. Some have tried to quit but have returned to cigarettes because smoking is such a strong addiction. It is a habit that is very difficult to break. There are many different reasons why people smoke.
Who is most likely to become addicted?
Anyone who starts using tobacco can become addicted to nicotine. Studies show that cigarette smoking is most likely to become a habit during the teen years. The younger a person is when they begin to smoke, the more likely they are to become addicted to nicotine. According to the 2012 Surgeon General’s Report, very few people start smoking after age 25. Nearly 9 out of 10 adult smokers started by age 18, and 99% started by age 26.
describe different ways of experiencing or managing certain kinds of feelings. Three of these feelings-states represent the positive feelings people get from smoking: a sense of increased energy or stimulation; the satisfaction of handling or manipulating things; and the enhancing of pleasurable feelings accompanying a state of well-being. The fourth is the decreasing of negative feelings by reducing a state of tension or feelings of anxiety, anger, shame, etc. The fifth is a complex pattern of increasing and decreasing “craving” for a cigarette, representing a psychological addiction to smoking. The sixth is habit smoking, which takes place in an absence of feeling-purely automatic smoking.
