We have recieved applications from outside Lagos even, athletes from Jos, Platue state and even as far as from Calabar, Cross River state have all indicated interests to be at the centenary celebration. They are in celebration mood and will be supporting the campaign for cervical cancer awareness.
Here, we are excited that the little we have done is appreciated, we are willing to do more for the unity of this country. FALILAT OGUNKOYA, HENRY AMIKE, ENOFIOK UDOBONG TO GRACE CENTENARY BEACH MARATHON
The organizers of the Centenary Beach marathon has said that the event will not only celebrate Nigeria’s centenary as a nation, but also will be
used as an advocacy tool to raise awareness on the scourge of cervical
cancer in Nigeria.
According to Barr. Obuesi Phillips who is the initiator of the BEACH MARATHON, over 9000 Nigerian women die annually as a result of this scourge, and the challenge is that the female population is ignorant of it.
The World Health Organisation in a release opined that unless there is widespread awareness across the sub-saharan Africa, there will be an increase of over 25% in the incidences of the disease within the region.
We have challenges, and so many of them that the people are not conscious of. There is the massive ocean erosion along our coastlines, there are environmental issues, there are security challenges and all this will form part of our campaigns. Mr. Obuesi explained further stating that beach race is pretty new in Nigeria but all hands are on deck to institutionalize it,
making it a regular sporting activity in Nigeria.
Speaking during the route marking for the marathon, the coordinator of the event, Mr. Chris Johnson explained that over 200 athletes have registered for the beach marathon so far, yet there are still opportunities for more athletes to register. He explained further that even fun lovers, family members and other picnickers will have the opportunity to participate in the event also as a way of celebrating our centenary as a nation.
Only a few days left to send us your application for the CENTENARY BEACH Marathon and take part in one of the world’s best sporting events. The 2013 event takes place on the 1st of Octber 2013 and we want you to be a part of it!
