This week on Celebrity of the week segment , we would be celebrating a Nigerian -renowned DJ , World record breaker , the only DJ that fought sleep back to back for 200 hours + , its DJ OBI.
DJ Obi , born as Obinna Ajuonuma in the mid 80’s to Late Dr. Levi Chibuike Ajuonuma, a respected presenter in the broadcasting industry (Open House Party on Raypower), although he later branched into oil and gas and grew to becoming Group General Manager Public Affairs Division of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation.who was on board the ill-fated Dana Airplane in 2012.
Obinna had his nursery and primary school in Nigeria , furthered his studies to Rainbow college in Nigeria.
He also had his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communication and Media Studies from Worcester State College
Obi caught the Dj-ing bug when he started following his dad to the Ray power Studios every Saturday where his father hosted the Open House Party.
He had the importunity to watching DJ Jimmy Jatt and DJ FX2 playing in the studio & sub-consciously learned the game.
Moving out of Nigeria for his tertiary education, his passion became his second source of making more aside his allowances he got from home.
With support from his father, he got his first set of DJ equipment and with practice he became an option for birthday parties and gigs around campus.
more than 10 years back and within a short time he has made a mark in hi field. He started officially djing house parties , birthday gigs .
He also worked with show promoters as well and was able to open for Lupe Fiasco at an event which to him was his first and major breakthrough for a new DJ like him.
During all these grinds, he met Naeto C, MI, Lynxxx, DJ Neptune, DJ Humility and a couple of other artistes that came into the states.
Coming back to Nigeria was a huge surprise to everyone as Obinna who left as s student came back a dj.
He then got hooked to SYNDIK8 Records, although he has all along been under his owned self imprint – AJ ENTERTAINMENT which he founded with a pharmacist cousin of his, Paul Ajuonuma.
He is currently Syndik8’s official DJ. He is known for his ability to take down any party , any day , anytime .
After his micro tour throughout the United States, in 2014 , he launched his official website .

With his participation in such events as, Winter Music Conference, Ultra Music Festival and South by Southwest (SXSW) the annual music, film and interactive conference that featured iconic performances from Swedish House Mafia, Kendrick Lamar, Skrillex, Deadmouse and Jay-Z & Kanye West etc.
DJ Obi has been in the business of making people dance to great tunes for over 8 years. He won the Nigerian Entertainment Award (NEA) for “World Best DJ” in 2011”.
Dj Obi has had the opportunity of working with artists on stage such as Lupe Fiasco, 2face, Lynxxx, Banky W, M.I, Naeto C, and a host of others.
He landed an endorsement deal with one of the top watch manufacturing brands in the world TAG Heuer recently , February 19 .
One distinctive feature of DJ OBI is that he plays with no headphones on! While in the states, his signature outfit was usually a corporate suit while playing but coming to Nigeria where the weather is quite hot, he opted to wearing T-Shirts and hats [All branded in DJ OBI’s name] Can you beat that ?
To crown it all , DJ Obi just conquered the world in 229 hours of djing , 10 days straight and has landed himself a name in history beating the former record holder of 200 hours by Polish DJ Norbert Selmaj in 2014.
He Based at Sao Café located on Lekki Phase One in Lagos for the record breaking days , the deck-master was only allowed five minute breaks every hour.
Performing from June 22nd to July 1st, he was only allowed two hours rest per day in total. While being monitored by a medical team and fed relevant nutrition, the physical exertion was far from small.
Even with the precautionary steps taken, the Nigerian experienced complex sleep-deprivation that tested his will power to say the least.
DJ Obi has officially broken the world record for longest DJ set to date.
” I woke up hallucinating after 4 or 5 days and had lost full control of my body…I used the loss my father as an inspiration, constantly thinking to myself that my Dad was watching me and would be disappointed if I failed.”
Performing on Serato, DJ Obi was not allowed to play a track twice in a four hour time frame. Easier said than done. However, his final track, Drake’s “One Dance”, also reflected his understated humour.
Levi Ajuonuma was the Group General Manager of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Public Affairs Division before his death in 2012. Ajuonuma died in a Dana Air place crash that killed all 153 passengers on board.
