1. Malaria

Malaria of course tops the list of Common Rainy Season diseases . The Female anopheles mosquito causes malaria; they usually breed in waterlogged areas.

Thus, clean your water tank frequently to avoid the risk of malaria. The common symptoms of malaria are fever, shivers, muscle pain and weakness.

2. Common Cold

This is a very very common Rainy Season disease that comes with the season and also due to temperature fluctuation. It is  estimated that more than 50 million people get the common cold annually in Nigeria.

Avoid getting drenched in the rain , ensure you look for a shelter to avoid getting soaked in.

It doesn’t just protect your clothes but also prevents you from getting sick and getting any infection .

Dr Joshua Adefila, a gynecologist at the First Faith Hospital, Iganmu, Lagos, said that the symptoms of cold included muscle ache, fatigue, headache and loss of appetite.

He said that although more than 200 viruses are identified to cause common cold; the rhinoviruses are the most common.

According to him, cold is transmitted via airborne droplets, direct contact with infected nasal secretions or contaminated objects.

He agreed with other medical experts that if pneumonia is not properly diagnosed, it could be mistaken for cold or flu.

3. Flu /Influenza
This is a higher level of respiratory disease that occur more during the rainy season .

One of the most threatening features of influenza is that it can develop into pneumonia and cause such serious complications.

The high-risk groups are children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with underlying health conditions.

It is transmitted through contact with a person who coughs or sneezes, or with surfaces, material and clothing contaminated with the discharges of an infected person.

4. Cholera

Cholera is another common Rainy Season disease which is an acute intestinal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

People who eat food or drink water contaminated by this bacteria have a high chance of getting infected.

One can prevent the occurrence of cholera by drinking clean water and maintain a proper hygiene.

 

5.  Diarrhea
This is another common Rainy Season disease, which is caused due to unhygienic consumption or handling of foods and water.

In order to prevent this bowel problem, maintain proper hygiene, wash hands before handling food and drink only boiled water.

6. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever
The disease is most prevalent during the rainy season common in tropical and sub-tropical countries in the world.

It is primarily transmitted by the bite of the Aedes mosquito , according to WHO. Dengue fever is potentially fatal and mainly affects children

There is currently no anti-dengue fever vaccine available. The only treatment is to treat the symptoms and take very good care of the patient during the critical stage, which is during the 24th–48th hours until the fever subsides.

You can prevent this fever by simply ;

Cleaning gutters of leaves and debris so that rainwater will not collect as breeding places of mosquitoes.

Cover water drums and water pails at all times to prevent mosquitoes from breeding
Replace water in flower vases once a week.
Clean all water containers once a week. Scrub the sides well to remove eggs of mosquitoes sticking to the sides
Puncture or cut old tires used as roof support to avoid accumulation of water
Collect and dispose all unusable tin cans, jars, bottles, and other items that can collect and hold water.

7. Typhoid
Typhoid is a water-borne disease, which is on high-rise during Rainy season .

It is a  bacterial infection which is transmitted through consuming contaminated water or food. Poor sanitation also causes this disease to spread.

The common symptoms of typhoid are fever, headache, weakness, pain and sore throat.

In order To prevent the occurrence of this problem wash your hands regularly, avoid consuming street-side food or water and drink plenty of healthy fluid.

8.  Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis, also known as Weil’s syndrome, is a  bacterial infection transmitted when urine and feces of infected animals such as rodents, contaminate the soil, water, and vegetation.

Incubation period of bacteria is 7-10 days.

Fever, Muscle pain, discoloration, Dark-colored urine, Light stools, Low urine output, Severe headache,Calf-muscle pain and reddish eyes, it can also get severe and cause liver/brain involvement or kidney failure.
How to prevent?

Avoid swimming or wading in flood water, Use boots and gloves, Drain potentially contaminated water, Control rodents in the household by using rat traps or rat poison, Maintain cleanliness in the house
